Navantia names Spain's ABB-powered submarine rescue ship Poseidón
Why it matters: Genuine movement on a long-running follow-up: the diesel-electric Poseidón, running on ABB's Onboard DC Grid, has gone from float-out to formal naming in the space of a week.
Navantia's Puerto Real yard held the naming ceremony for the BAM-IS submarine rescue ship A-21 Poseidón on 18 September, days after its float-out. The vessel, sponsored by Spain's first underwater archaeologist María Dolores Higueras Rodríguez, is built around ABB's Onboard DC Grid: a diesel-electric power and distribution system with battery support to handle peak loads during rescue work, plus high redundancy for the kind of fault tolerance a rescue ship can't do without. Poseidón can deploy a submarine rescue vehicle and ROVs to 3,000 metres and holds MOSHIP certification for NATO submarine rescue operations. Delivery to the Armada follows.
