Ford Australia kills off the diesel Tourneo, hands the people-mover job to a petrol PHEV
Why it matters: Another diesel nameplate goes extinct in a developed market, this time explicitly because of Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, a preview of pressure other diesel vans and people-movers will face.
Ford Australia is dropping the diesel Tourneo people-mover entirely, replacing it from the 2027.25 model year with a plug-in hybrid built around a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine, an electric motor and an 11.8kWh usable battery. The outgoing 2.0-litre turbo-diesel made 125kW and 390Nm with a 2,500kg braked towing limit. The PHEV makes a combined 171kW, claims up to 51km of electric-only range, but drops braked towing to an expected 1,850kg. Pricing rises only modestly, up about $2,250 over the equivalent diesel, with Active from $73,340 and Titanium X from $76,840 plus on-road costs. Ford cited NVES compliance, customer demand and the wider shift to electrified vans.
